OH dear! When a few residents of Whitchurch Road become concerned about our safety (and that of others), we really did not expect to receive a deluge of demeaning adjectives such as those aimed at us by Mr Mathew in the Times last week.

I myself always thought that healthy — impassioned but never insulting — debate was the backbone of democracy. 'Normal intelligence' (how does one measure that I wonder?) Timid, incompetent, downright anti-motorist, pathetic — I should never have expected such comments (while never challenging Mr Mathew's right to deliver his own opinions) from someone who has held public office for so long and in whom many of us placed our confidence to do so.
