I AM appalled that anyone with a real concern for the preservation and welfare of Tavistock could ever think of imposing a huge concrete monstrosity in a dominating position over the historic heart of the town. A park and ride scheme must surely be a preferred option.

But why not also think more imaginatively and consider reviving the traditional skills of the town and tunneling into the heights on either side of the river?

The Abbey Rise car park, for example, offers easy access to the base of a high cliff face, which could contain a number of floors, with no adverse effect on the environment.

There are other possible access sites which might also be considered, and examples of similar solutions to parking problems elsewhere; in Geneva for example. It might even by cheaper!
