YELVERTON folk sensation Seth Lakeman took time out from a hectic touring schedule to go back in time last week, as he wowed students at his old school. Seth, who has just completed the European and British legs of a tour supporting The Levellers, performed in front of more than 500 students at Tavistock College last Tuesday. And some lucky youngsters even had the opportunity to join the 28-year-old Nationwide Mercury Music Prize nominee on the stage. Seth said he was delighted to be able to come back to his old school ? and to be involved with Tavistock Music Live (TML), which organised the event. He said his time spent at Tavistock College had been ?incredibly inspirational? to him and that supporting any organisation involved in staging live music, particularly a local one, was very important to him. Peter Jones of TML said: ?It went very well indeed ? I spoke to the headmaster later and he was very impressed, he thought it went down really well and he?s hoping to get some more live music going on at the school.? Martin Griffin of TML said: ?It was a good day ? and he was great because the night before he was on stage with The Levellers in Portsmouth until about 11pm, he drove down here and then drove back to London to play with The Pogues, so we were very impressed. ?It?s seemed to go down pretty well with the kids ? he?s got local celebrity status and he?s a Tavi school guy ? it was good.? While on stage Seth played tracks from his acclaimed album Kitty Jay, which won him the coveted Mercury nomination, and also material from his new album. The Seth Lakeman visit to Tavistock College was one of the first live music events that TML has organised thanks a grant from the Local Network Fund. The organisation, formed last year with the ultimate aim of building a multi-million pound recording studio in Tavistock, is hoping to stage more music events shortly, including a woodwind and brass workshop for young people in March, a composition workshop and some medieval music events.
