the last event of the current Charter Year celebrations in Tavistock, a concert of medieval music performed by Lammas, took place last Tuesday in St Eustachius Parish Church. The event was opened by town mayor Jenny Metcalf. Sarah and Phil, collectively known as Lammas, played authentic medieval instruments to a packed church that mixed music, singing, readings and humour. Some of the tunes were recognisable as those used for modern carols, while some were heard for the first time after being rediscovered and reintroduced to today?s audiences. All who attended were engrossed by the virtuosity shown by playing instruments that in some cases bore no resemblance to modern ones. One of the English bagpipes played was based upon a stone carving found in the church that was ?rescued? from Tavistock Abbey and thought to date from the 13thcentury. Deputy mayor Caroline Keane thanked Lammas, Preb John Rawlings and the charter group for making the event such a great success. The Friends of St Eustachius provided refreshments.
