SOUTH West Devon Conservative MP Gary Streeter has called on the Government to speed up the payment of Single Farm Payments to farmers. The SFP scheme is grant cash provided by the EU for farmers. The British Government received the funding last December, but due to computer problems experienced by the Rural Payments Agency ? which administers the payments ? many farmers have not yet received their payments. Mr Streeter said: ?Farmers in my constituency are now getting desperate for these payments and the Government does not seem to appreciate the gravity of the situation for many farmers. ?The Government, that is us the British taxpayer, faces a penalty by the EU if the money has not been paid by the end of June to farmers. ?Many farmers face genuine hardship if these payments do not materialise within days. ?The Government must urgently put more resources into the scheme to get this backlog cleared,? said the MP.
