A WOMAN from Gunnislake and her two young children escaped with only light injuries last Thursday afternoon after an accident on a stretch of road used as a rat-run by local motorists

Elaine Cantwell, 29, was walking with her children — Sarah, three, and 17-month-old Daniel — in a tandem pushchair when she was in collision with a car.

Tavistock doctor Brian Steggles and a nurse attended and later police and an ambulance. Mrs Cantwell was taken to Tavistock Hospital and the children were left with her friend.

Mrs Cantwell, who lives in Pine View, Gunnislake, is still shaken by the accident.

'It's going to be a long time before I get down there again,' she said.

A Tavistock police spokesman said it was a 60mph road, used by people trying to shave 30 seconds off their journey time and there is no pavement.
