A WEST Devon mother and son are currently hard in training for a long distance run in aid of the RNLI. Michael Cooper, a student at Bath University, and his mother, Marilyn, who lives at Inwardleigh, will tackle the Bath Half Marathon on March 16, to raise vital funds for RNLI lifeguards. Michael, 21, who is studying coach education and sports development, is a keen runner and regularly competes in half marathons. He persuaded Marilyn, 53, to take up running last year. Michael said: 'I suggested we do the half marathon together, but it was mum who said we should do it to raise money for the RNLI lifeguards. 'When I go home I always try and visit the beach and always notice the lifeguards; I think they do a great job. 'Mum and I have been training together when we can, and I'm quite surprised how fast she is!' Marilyn's first running event was the Ruby Run, between Hatherleigh and Holsworthy, last year. She said: 'I did the Ruby Run just for fun and I really enjoyed it, so when Michael suggested I did the half marathon, I thought I might as well have a reason for running it. 'I grew up by the sea and have a lot of respect for the sea and the bravery of the RNLI lifeguards and volunteer lifeboat crews. 'I don't think people realise just how dangerous the sea can be if you don't know what you are doing.' Marilyn said she was putting much more effort into training for the half marathon and was pleased at the way she was running. 'I would love to be able to do it in two hours. I did the Ruby Run in two hours sixteen, but hopefully this run will be flatter and a lot cooler,' said Marilyn. 'It's great to be able to do something like this with my son and I am really pleased with the hard work I have put in,' she said. Cara Rowley, RNLI beach events manager, said: 'We still have a limited number of guaranteed places available for the Bath Half Marathon. 'With just enough time to train, it's a great event and a perfect start to a healthy New Year.'
