TAKE a bow, pupils from Okehampton Primary School, who are learning the violin. A whole Year 4 class at the primary are currently receiving weekly violin lessons, thanks to a generous donation from the Okehampton Educational Foundation which allowed the school to buy a class set of violins. Brain Cunningham, headteacher, said: ?It may not be an instrument which all the children will choose to carry on playing but I think it is good to give them a chance to try out something a bit different.? The school has also recently had its good work on improving children?s health recognised by being awarded Healthy School status. Mr Cunningham said Okehampton Primary was ?delighted? to have been recognised as such, as the Government had introduced tough new criteria for becoming recognised as a healthy school community. Schools are assessed in areas such as PE activities, school meals, personal, social and health education. Okehampton Primary was recently successfully assessed by the local authority, and will be presented with the accolade at a future awards ceremony.
