YOUR correspondent Mr Bainbridge (May 16) is considerably out of touch and is obviously being badly briefed by 'past and present servicemen'.

Since the end of the cold war and the withdrawal of the army from Germany, training grounds in this small and overcrowded country are at a premium. Modern weapons are no good without the field craft skills moorland training provides — it may not be ideal but it is better than nothing.

Our servicemen can be called on at any time to put their lives on the line in the service of this country, as they are doing at present in Afghanistan and other places of conflict. To that end they deserve whatever facilities they need to ensure they are at the highest state of readiness possible — otherwise lives may be lost.

Mr Bainbridge's continuing diatribe should be treated with the contempt it deserves. Who are these past and present servicemen advising him?
