A FORMER mayor of Tavistock has recently been presented to the president and a prince of one of the most populated countries in Africa.

John Warne met Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, President of Nigeria, in connection with work. Mr Warne is a director of companies which provide improved security, healthcare and transportation in Nigeria.

He said the president was a ?very pleasant, good humoured and humble man? who, following his recent re-election, was building on his people?s clear desire for democratic government.

Mr Warne said Prince P O Adeniyi was an ?exceptional businessman? who strove to mix business with improving social standards in Nigeria.

?This fits the president?s lead, where he is encouraging private initiatives to improve society?s needs,? said Mr Warne.

Mr Warne?s work in Nigeria has meant long periods away from the UK, which is is likely to continue for some months.

But he said despite his absence from Tavistock, he is still very involved with the Crowndale Recreational Association, of which he is chairman.

The CRA is one of the partners of the West Devon Borough Council-led bid to the Football Association for improved sports facilities at the football club, Crowndale and Tavistock College.

Mr Warne said: ?I have been able to keep in touch with all the development and provide input either by e-mail or in person. In particular, I am indebted to Mike Jefferies, CRA treasurer, for his input ? we are fortunate to have his experience and he keeps me informed.

?My commitment to deliver further facilities at Crowndale remains as strong as ever.

?Once the facilities are achieved for the CRA, I would like to build on that success and form a foundation specifically to underpin the CRA facilities, to provide new areas for sport and recreation throughout the town.?
