TRAVEL specialists Venture Co will be hosting a special 'Meet the Book Bus' event in Tavistock next month, to help spread the word about mobile literacy in Africa and beyond.

 The free evening event, on December 12 at the Bedford Hotel, offers the chance to find out more about the Book Bus mobile literacy projects in Africa, South America and Asia in the company of the chairman of the Book Bus Charity, David Gordon, who will talk about plans for 2013 and new volunteering opportunities in India.

 The Book Bus works in local communities to raise literacy levels within primary school-age children.

The permanent crew, assisted by up to eight volunteers, visit schools and act as reading mentors.

Their task is to bring books to life and this is achieved through storytelling, puppet-making arts and crafts and a variety of other media. The emphasis is to bring an element of fun to the task of learning to read.
