WEST Devon youngsters scooped a record ten medals at this year?s Devon Youth Games. The delighted youngsters collected one gold, two silver and seven bronze awards for their efforts at the annual all-day sporting event against seven other district areas in Devon. More than 1,000 young sportspeople from across the county, including over 100 young people from West Devon, took part in the games, which were hosted this year by Mid Devon District Council in Tiverton. Ten sports were represented, from the traditional ? such as cricket and hockey ? to more unconventional activities, such as skateboarding, BMX and in-line skating. New sports this year were badminton, volleyball and street sports. Taking the individual credits were 15-year-old Peter Reveley of Tavistock who won a gold medal in the open park category on street sports and James Follett, also 15, of Tavistock who collected silver in the BMX ramp category individual awards. In the aquathlon, Laura Aspen won bronze in the senior age group whilst Rebecca Windemer picked up another bronze in the intermediate age group. In the team events, West Devon won two bronze medals in the inter mixed and senior mixed aquathlon, a bronze for the boys hockey team, a bronze for the girls tag rugby, a silver for the junior netball team and a bronze for the senior netball team. The tag rugby mixed team came fourth, the mixed aquathlon came fifth, the tennis, athletics and badminton teams came sixth and the girls hockey team came seventh. Team West Devon came third in the Fair Play Trophy and sixth overall. Cllr Jayne Hill, chairman of West Devon?s environment and community committee said that the borough results were outstanding. ?It was a wonderful day and the children were so friendly to each other yet competitive at the same time. ?They truly enjoyed taking part and if they won, that was a bonus! It was exciting to watch and I was very proud of West Devon.? Tammy Messenger, team co-ordinator and sports development officer for West Devon Borough Council, said it was the team?s best effort since the games began in 1999. ?We had a brilliant day with some fantastic performances and brought back some well deserved medals. We had such positive feedback from all team managers and every competitor can justifiably feel proud of what they did. I was delighted for the boys who did so well in the street sports event. ?Their medals are a fantastic achievement particularly as they train at Taviskate Park which has only been open since October. ?My thanks goes to everyone who took part; competitors, volunteers and team managers. Everyone worked so very hard and without these volunteers there would be no games at all.?
