CONTRACTORS this week took on crowds of angry seagulls in Tavistock, as they used a huge crane to give the domed roof at Meadowlands swimming pool a long-overdue spring clean.

Rob Whitehead, Meadowlands manager, said the special equipment required to clean the glass pool roof had been ?a nightmare? to source.

Mr Whitehead said: ?It?s the first time it?s been cleaned in 14 years.

?The crane is the only one of its kind in Europe, it?s very specialised and to get it booked in here has taken nearly a year, it?s been a logistical nightmare.?

Mr Whitehead said the seagulls were one of the primary factors involved in the spring clean, due to their fondness for congregating on the roof.

?It?s nice and warm up there, we get flocks of them up there and we?ve had them getting quite cross this morning because we?re on their perching ground!? he said.

In addition to cleaning the domed roof, the contractors also gave the canopy and cafeteria roof a wash and brush-up.
