KELLY College?s Matthew Henry, 14, competed in the 16 and under Devon Championships and 16 and under Open Championships when he competed in the Devon County Amateur Swimming Association?s Open Water Championships at Oddicombe Beach, Torbay recently.
This was Matthew?s first venture into open water swimming and he was more than pleased to find the sea was not too cold and flat. Matthew had gone to Cornwall the weekend before to have practice swimming in the sea.
Matthew took the lead from the start when the 16 and under swimmers set off on their 1,500m and never looked back, finishing nearly two minutes in front of the second 16 and under swimmer, so gaining first place in both the Devon Championships and the 16 and under Open Championship.
He was awarded two gold medals and a trophy by the Devon County ASA President, Mrs. Sue Butler.
