Tavistock 4
St Austell 3
TAVISTOCK Men's Hockey firsts continued their unbeaten start to the season with victory over mid-table visitors St Austell.
Despite missing four key players Tavistock demonstrated this year's squad has strength in depth by putting four past St Austell in the first half.
They took the lead with a well-placed shot by Bob Cowen. St Austell levelled when keeper Martin Osborne could only slow up a strong shot which rolled over the line.
An excellent second Tavistock goal came when Cowen got behind the St Austell defence, to set up Andrew Roberts-Ray with a clinical strike from close range.
Further Tavistock goals, from captain Nick Aveyard and Andy Knox, both came from short corners.
St Austell re-organised and came back strongly after the break, while a complacent Tavistock seemed happy to defend their lead.
Two goals by the Cornish side were just reward for their efforts.
With the latest league placing yet to be published it is likely Tavistock hold second spot, behind Plymouth A, with three wins and two draws, from the twelve teams in South West division I.
Saturday, Tavistock v Plymouth University A away.
