aA NEW charity shop has opened in Tavistock.

The St Luke's Hospice shop, at 14 Duke Street, is the smallest of the charity's 12 shops and has been redecorated with the help of volunteers and hospice staff.

Shop manager Kathy Edwards said she was amazed at the response in the first days of trading: 'People have been very positive and very generous. We took more in a day than we thought we would in three days.'

The success means there is an urgent need for more items to sell, so donations would be welcome. More volunteers are also needed to help in the shop.

Jonathan Farnhill, director of funding for the hospice, said support for the hospice had always been strong in Tavistock, with an active friends group and hundreds of members for the hospice lottery.

'We know that our other shops bring customers in to an area and we hope the same will happen in Tavistock,' he added.

l A bric-a-brac and plant sale at the weekend raised an amazing £1,200 to help the Children's Hospice South West maintain its good work.

Linda Downing, chairperson of the Buckland Monachorum Friends' Group, said: 'It was the generosity of the people in our local community who gave us things to sell and the generosity of the people who bought them that enabled us to raise such a splendid sum.

'I'm absolutely delighted, a lot of hard work has gone into this and £1,200 is a lot of money to raise on one day, so we're very grateful and thankful.'

Mrs Downing said the hospice needed £1.7-million a year for its work with terminally ill children in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset. This is all raised voluntarily by groups such as the Buckland one.
