FOLLOWING almost five years of administration by a dedicated committee, the children's play park on Walkhampton Memorial Field has been passed back to the village hall committee with the passing over of official documents. The play park is known locally for its unconventional equipment, for the most part constructed of seasoned timber. One comment on a recent survey commissioned by the hall described it as 'one of the best children's park we have been to in a village for years'. In their time as custodians, Pam Kitchin, Chris Morley and Kay Miall along with a number of volunteer helpers raised thousands of pounds by organising such events as popular plant sales and imaginative village fun days. While these activities will continue, initially raising money for the play park, the maintenance of the equipment and grounds will now come under the auspices of the Memorial Hall. Mr Morley said: 'We are very pleased with the final result. 'The facility is now complete for the young families and grandparents to enjoy. 'Therefore the small committee, who are not getting any younger themselves, feel that they have fulfilled the original objectives and it is timely to offer the facility back to the hall. 'The play park areas will continue to require inspection and minor maintenance and it is hoped that younger members of the village will offer their help to maintain this excellent addition to the expanding activities of the Memorial Hall. Simon Ward, secretary of the Memorial Hall committee, said: 'The administration that was formally passed across at the end of March came to the hall in perfect order. 'We are confident that the monies received will be enough to see the play park through for another three years. 'These funds are being held in a self-contained account and will be used solely on the play park.'
