TAVISTOCK residents Kit Harbottle and Hilary Johnson were among the 225,000 people who marched peacefully around Edinburgh on Saturday. They were calling on G8 leaders to give more and better aid, drop the debt, and bring trade justice. Hilary said: ?It was wonderful. Although we were making a serious point, it was a joyful family event, with pushchairs and wheelchairs decked with white ribbons and balloons, and a very friendly welcome from the people of Edinburgh. ?The number of young people there was striking. ?These are the issues politicians need to tackle to get their respect.? Kit met up with her student daughter, Alison, at the rally. Messages from churches in Tavistock were among thousands which draped giant letters raised by cranes in the evening sunshine, spelling out the call to Make Poverty History. Kit added: ?It was a memorable day, but this campaign is not about a day or a week. ?We will hold the governments to account for what they actually do over coming months, and hope that our new MP will support us in this.?
