A LUNCH club for the elderly at Halwill?s Winsford Centre will be running as usual, despite Age Concern withdrawing its support.
Age Concern Okehampton and Torridge has suspended its services for older people at the community centre.
Chief officer of the Age Concern branch Barrie Duke said it had proved necessary for the organisation to review its work.
?The trustees have reluctantly authorised this suspension for four weeks, in the interest of users, and hope to quickly clarify their concerns,? he said.
Mr Duke, who was instrumental in getting the Winsford Centre project off the ground after the health authority decided to close the building as a hospital in 1999, said the concerns covered a range of areas, including the running of the centre.
But he added that the work of the centre was of great importance to the support of older people who came from a wide area in North West Devon.
Day care, including bathing, activities and full lunches, has been carried out by Age Concern staff and volunteers on two days a weeks at the centre which is also home to the local doctor?s surgery.
Chairman of the Winsford Trust Sandra Willetts said the Tuesdays and Thursdays lunch club would continue as normal.
?It?s business as usual,? she said. ?Age Concern is reviewing its operations, but as far as we are concerned the lunch club and the Winsford Trust are carrying on as normal.
?Age Concern?s involvement was more on the administrative side and volunteers will continue to run the lunch club.?
The Winsford Trust was formed to purchase the old cottage hospital and use it for the benefit of the community.
Mrs Willetts said the centre was very popular in the community and was continuing to build on its success with services for the elderly, mothers and toddlers and activities such as yoga.
