THE new footbridge across the River Tavy in Tavistock's Meadows should be in place by the beginning of December, if all goes according to plan. The old bridge was removed at the end of last month — part of a long-standing £100,000 project to replace the crumbling structure. Wayne Southall, the town council's works superintendent, said work on the abutments for the new bridge was started last Friday. 'We are now in the construction phase,' said Mr Southall. 'Lighting in the main paths and surrounding areas in the Meadows will be out for approximately three weeks. The new bridge has been made and has just gone away for dipping and painting. 'The fast food cabin has been moved — as soon as the new bridge is in place, the cabin will be moved back a couple of days later, then Western Power will come in and re-instate the lighting.' Mr Southall said the whole of Pearce's Meadow had been closed for the duration of the work — signs have been erected on all entrances to the Meadows informing the public of the closures. However, the skatepark in Benson's Meadow is still in full use.
