THE Liberal Democrats won a seat in a by-election in Tavistock Town Council's north ward yesterday (Thursday) — by just two votes.
Lib Dem candidate Peter Donkin polled 304 votes, closely followed by Conservative Pat Westaway with 302.
Labour and Co-op candidate Harry Smith, the council's former deputy mayor, was third with 89 votes, and in fourth place was Michael Pithouse standing under the banner of Affordable Council Tax candidate who polled 76 votes.
There were 773 votes polled in total with two spoilt papers. The turnout was 19.07 per cent.
The seat was made vacant by the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Harry Pearson in January.
The make up of the 16-strong town council is Independents 10, Liberal Democrats 4, Conservatives one, Labour and Co-op one.
