YOUNGSTERS and adults alike enjoyed a birthday party to remember last week, as Okehampton Children's Centre celebrated its fifth anniversary.
The centre opened five years ago to provide free support to parents and carers of under 5s. Managed by Barnardo's on behalf of Devon County Council, it uses local venues to offer a wide range of services, including parenting programmes, first aid courses, baby massage and breastfeeding peer support.
To celebrate their success, the team held a party in the Charter Hall on July 18.
Youngsters and carers with the centre also took part in the Barnardo's Big Toddle in Simmons Park that morning. The event is the UK's biggest annual charity event for under 5s, with up to half a million children taking part in a short sponsored walk to raise money for Barnardo's. The theme was superheroes, and many of the children toddled in fancy dress costumes.
Families then joined staff in the Charter Hall to cut a decorated birthday cake at noon. The party had a safety theme, with representatives from the fire service, RNLI, and Dartmoor National Park talking to youngsters. Children also enjoyed crafts and a bouncy castle.
Charlotte Vuvoka, administrative assistant for the centre, said: 'Everything went really well, with lots of people turning out for the toddle and the special anniversary party.
'The turnout was brilliant, especially for the toddle. The weather was really terrible and everyone still turned out and braved the rain, so that was great.
'The party was great too, with adults and children alike having fun and enjoying themselves.'
Staff at the centre expressed thanks to everyone who attended the Big Toddle and the party, and everyone who helped organise the events.
Activities at the children's centre include young parents' groups, breastfeeding groups, first aid courses, stay-and-play sessions, home visits, health clinics, ante-natal classes and support for childminders.
