OKEHAMPTON and District Tennis Club continued its support of the Sports Week by hosting a fun morning of tennis for the under 11s on the Simmons Park Courts. More than 30 juniors were given the opportunity to develop their basic tennis and ball skills.
In the afternoon the club held the Sports Week open mixed doubles tournament for the Town Cup. The competition was organised as a round-robin contest with Jackie Jarvis and Alan Holman the eventual winners of a closely fought competition.
Teresa Sanderson and Mick Massey played three long drawn out matches against the other competitors and were unlucky to lose on each occasion by the narrowest of margins.
Chairman, David Carter presented the town mixed doubles trophy to the winners and hoped everyone had enjoyed a pleasant afternoon's tennis.
On Monday July 10 the ladies' A team played host to Tunnels at Simmons Park where they were happy to improve on recent form by achieving a 2-2 draw and enjoying some competitive tennis.
Angela Herrod Taylor and Lin Atkinson won their matches 6-0; 6-1 and 7-6; 6-2 while Nicola Ferguson and Julia Moysey lost 3-6; 0-6 and 6-0; 3-6; 4-6.
On Thursday July 13 the men's B team played Tunnels at Simmons Park where they lost 3-1. Alan Holman and David Paige lost 3-6; 2-6 and 6-7; 0-6 while David Carter and Jeremy Stephens played well together winning their second match 6-2; 7-6.
The ladies' A team were back in action again on Thursday playing Country Club at Simmons Park. Angela Herrod Taylor and Lin Atkinson regained their match form to win 6-1;6-3 and 6-4; 6-0 while Nicola Ferguson and Marcia Jones were involved in two long undecided matches which were left unfinished due to poor light.
Chairman, David Carter will begin a series of adult tennis coaching sessions at the Simmons Park courts on Thursdays at 7.30pm starting on July 20. These sessions have been planned following requests from adults wishing to refresh their existing tennis skills and from those who would like to play social tennis.
