THE Ladies’ Squad of Tamar and Tavy Gig Club recently received a new set of oars, which they used for the first time on Saturday, December 9.

Westmoor Vet Hospital, Morris Bros and Neil Gillbanks generously sponsored an oar each, with private sponsorship completing the funding for the set of six oars.

All Cornish pilot gig clubs row with traditionally-made wooden oars and the ladies were very pleased with how the new oars felt to row with.

After their row, the ladies celebrated with the oar sponsors and the squad coaches and enjoyed mulled wine and mince pies.

The oars have been received in time for winter training. The World Pilot Gig Championships take place on the Isles of Scilly during the first weekend of May 2018 and the men’s and ladies’ squads are starting their training in earnest.

The new oars will give the ladies’ training a boost and they are very grateful to the sponsors. They are also looking forward to rowing with the oars at championships and regattas for years to come.

The Tamar and Tavy Gig Clubs row from Weir Quay, on the Bere Peninsula, and welcomes new rowers of all ages.

The club has a thriving junior squad, men’s and ladies’ squads and a squad for social rowing.
