LABOUR'S David Brenton is to fight his fourth general election in the West Devon and Torridge constituency.

He said: 'I have twice increased the Labour vote and expect to do so again.

'After four years of a Labour government people have seen an improvement in their living standards. I hope people will now have the confidence to vote as they want to, not tactically.'

Mr Brenton, 55, was born in North Devon and lives in Bideford. He has been a Torridge district councillor for 16 years and is a mental health support worker in North Devon.

The Green Party has also selected a prospective candidate. He is Martin Quinn, who is standing for the first time. The party had no candidate in the constituency in 1997.

Mr Quinn said: 'A large number of Labour supporters have become disillusioned with its performance on the environment and social justice and have joined us.'

He said national issues would dominate the campaign, but the Greens would highlight local issues, such as genetically modified food and the importance of supporting local producers.

Mr Quinn, 45, lives in Tavistock and works at the University of Plymouth as research support unit manager.

The other election candidates already announced are: John Burnett MP, Liberal Democrat; Geoffrey Cox, Conservative; and Robert Edwards, UK Independence Party.

At the 1997 general election, Mr Burnett won the seat with a majority of 1,957.
