THOUSANDS of pounds were stolen during an armed raid on a tiny West Devon post office last week. The terrifying incident occurred at Crapstone Post Office and Stores on Tuesday, just after the shop re-opened following the lunchtime break. Postmaster Mark Bruton said he and his wife, Jennifer, were aware people were banging on the door during the lunch break, but as they were expecting a bed to be delivered the following day, they assumed the delivery men had turned up early. When Mr Bruton, 50, opened up at 2pm, he saw no delivery lorry and thought nothing more of the interruption. He said: ?We didn?t notice them come in, then suddenly they grabbed us and forced me into the post office at knifepoint. ?They were shouting all sorts of things, telling me to give them the money from the till and the safe. ?They didn?t have hoods on or anything, they told us not to look at them but we kept trying to take sneaky looks without antagonising them. ?At that point they bundled us out the back, put handcuffs on us and ran out. ?They told us to stay still, but I didn?t because I wanted to see what they were getting away in ? they actually got away in a taxi. I got the number, then the police arrived.? Mr Bruton said the whole incident only took two or three minutes ?he and his wife Jennifer, 47, were not injured by the attackers. He said: ?It?s afterwards really that it affects you. At the time it?s all a bit surreal, like it?s not really happening to you ? your adrenaline is going, but afterwards, you start to relive bits.? Mr Bruton said he and his wife had been overwhelmed by the reaction of the community, following the raid. ?The village has been tremendous ? we?ve been inundated with flowers and things, they?ve been very supportive,? he said. Investigating officer DC Kevin Hunt, of Tavistock CID, said inquiries are continuing into the robbery. A man was arrested on Tuesday but released later that night without charge. Statements have been taken and door-to-door visits have been made in the area. DC Kevin Hunt said the two suspects were described as both being in their 20s, and of very thin build. One had mid-brown short cropped hair and was wearing a blue kagoul jacket with hood and baggy trousers. The second man had short, mousey hair. Anyone who may have seen the two suspects in the area before the robbery on Tuesday, or who saw them running away from the shop, should contact the police on 08452 777444 or through Crimestoppers on 0800 555111, quoting log 724 of February 1.
