A TAVISTOCK College A-level student performed a live concert from her family kitchen in Tavistock and raised more than £300 for Show Racism the Red Card — an anti-racism education charity.

Amelia Harrison, 17, was moved by the Black Lives Matter movement worldwide and wanted to do something to help and decided that she would perform with her guitar for 50 minutes playing songs with lyrics that related to the current issues around the world.

Amelia said: ‘After hearing everyone’s opinions about the Black Lives Matter movement in America it became very clear that racism happens everywhere and even in our own town, watching people I know become racially stereotyped was unbearable and it felt wrong not to do anything to help.

‘The charity I chose was an anti-racism education charity — I believe it is so extremely important for children to be educated on the importance of equality and black history, if we can’t teach older generations how to behave correctly when it comes to racial profiling then at least we can raise new generations with the correct education.

‘Hopefully one day our world will be filled with people who only have love in their hearts for everyone, no matter what race they are.’

During the livestream Amelia performed included Zombie by The Cranberries, Listen Before I Go by Billie Eilish, I See Fire by Ed Sheeran and Summertime Sadness by Lana Del Ray.

‘The live stream raised £310,’ said Amelia.

‘I was so blown away with everyone’s support, it even made me a bit emotional!’

Amelia added: ‘I chose most of these songs because the lyrics related to our current issues in the world. It was actually quite hard to sing these without feeling a little upset.

‘However, I am so glad I did this and I can only hope that one day the fight for people to have basic human rights will stop.’
