THE 24-year-old man who died last Saturday after jumping 100 feet from rocks into a flooded quarry at Kit Hill, near Callington, has been named as Stephen Royston, from St Ann?s Chapel.

Mr Royston?s death is not being treated as suspicious, and a formal inquiry has been launched by North Cornwall District Council under health and safety legislation.

The tragedy has shocked the local community.

Callington town councillor and former portreeve, Kath Pascoe, said: ?It?s very sad indeed, and I?m sure everyone?s thoughts are with his family, especially his mother and father.

?It?s a terrible tragedy that someone that young should lose his life like that. It should never have happened.?

The alarm was raised shortly before 6pm on Saturday, when Mr Royston plunged into the pool ? which is 30-feet deep in places ? and failed to resurface.

The emergency services immediately searched the water. Mr Royston?s body was recovered more than four hours later by police divers, who had been hampered by low visibility in the pool.

His body was taken to Derriford Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Kit Hill Country Park is managed by Cornwall County Council, and attracts more than 100,000 visitors each year.
