Okehampton Ladies' seconds 2

Plymouth University

Ladies' seconds 1

THE young Okehampton second team were prepared for a tough match on Sunday after losing to their opponents by one goal earlier in the season.

Plymouth University brought an athletic and fit team to Okehampton for this crucial league game.

The first half was an even contest with Hannah Whiteley and Sophie Cunnington penetrating the University defence down the left side to attack the goal, only to be thwarted by strong defending tackling.  The visitors were quick to attack back, moving the ball swiftly down the pitch forcing strong defending play from Sophie Whiteley and Nat Dennis.

Oke kept the pressure on and when captain Sarah Jones passed a perfectly placed ball to centre forward Kim Davey and Davey made no mistake in hammering the ball into the back of the University's net.

After a positive half time team talk Oke came out raring to go and capitalise on their half time lead.  Brieze Read and Grace Thorp combined well forcing the University defence onto their back foot. During this attacking phase of play the ball hit the visitors' goal post three times, denying the Oke girls a further goal.

When the University counter-attacked talented youngster Rachel Laidlaw showed her skill and determination with excellent defensive play. Unfortunately Oke conceded a penalty corner which  the visitors converted into an equalising goal.

Both teams lifted the pace of the game, determined to score a winning goal.  Oke  piled on the pressure and were rewarded with a penalty corner which Kim Davey confidently put into the back of the net goal to clinch victory. Joint players of the match went to Kim Davey and Rachel Laidlaw.
