West Devon Cup Final at Brickfields
Kelly College U14 XV 31
Tavistock College
U14 XV 13
THIS game was always going to be tense with it being a cup final between two Tavistock teams, many of whom play together for Tavistock RFC.
Kelly College made the first inroads with some good driving play which led to Harry Wyatt going over for an unconverted try.
Tavistock mounted their own challenge and with a great penalty kick from just outside the ten-metre line by Ewen McCall took the score to 5-3.
Tavistock College started to play well and dominated the game, pinning Kelly back in their own 22 for ten minutes. The pressure did not lead to a score for Tavistock so the teams went in at half-time separated by only two points.
The second half started well for Kelly and a converted try by Harry Le Page put them nine points ahead. But Tavistock College fought back, showing good skills and spirit and scored twice in the two corners, firstly Damien Dee and secondly Tom Clutterbuck, the eventual man of the match. This put the score at 13-12 to Tavistock with ten minutes to go.
But a little relaxing by Tavistock led to Kelly?s winger Guy Jedwab going over for a well deserved try.
Tavistock started to play catch-up rugby and Kelly tightened their hold over the title with another try from Wyatt.
As the game came to an end, the Kelly captain broke free and passed out of the tackle for Doug Willats to score and Guy Jedwab to convert to leave a flattering score line of 31-13 to Kelly College.
The game at Brickfields was enjoyed by both teams; the manner in which it was played and the enjoyment shown by the players was a testament to both the colleges in Tavistock.
