MORE use should be made of the 'trim trail' in Tavistock's Meadows, which could even be the focus of a community keep-fit programme.

Local Nordic walking and fitness instructor Elaine Sylvester last week told members of Tavistock Town Council that the trail was under-used and asked if councillors felt a programme of keep-fit classes based around the trail could be feasible.

Ms Sylvester said: 'Not many people know how to use the equipment properly — there are often kids playing around it but it's not really used for the purpose it was intended for.

'I had the idea that I could use the equipment, take people around and instruct them how to use the different pieces safely and how to get the most out of it.'

Ms Sylvester said her idea was 'very embryonic' at present and she needed to do more research.

'I just feel if people saw groups of people using it, it would encourage others,' she said.

Cllr Brian Trew said he thought it was an 'absolutely great idea' but he was concerned about insurance issues, which would need thorough investigation.

Cllr Ashley Tossell said: 'I think it's a great idea — the trail is under-used. The college used to use it but they have different facilities now — I think it would be lovely to see people using it properly.'

Cllr Ted Sherrell suggested the proposal, with more detailed information, be placed on a forthcoming agenda of the properties committee for further discussion.
