THE Plymouth and District Lawn Tennis League competition has been completed and Tavistock Tennis Club had a good season overall, especially the juniors who proved themselves to be the best in the area.

The men's A team did well in division 1, as runners-up to the mighty Ivybridge A, and the D team in division 6 as runners-up to Ivybridge D. The B and C teams maintained their status in divisions 2 and 4.

The ladies' B team did exceptionally well to win division 4 by the wide margin of 13 points, so being promoted.

The A and C teams although demoted to divisions 2 and 5 had some good matches and it was unfortunate it was not possible to field stronger teams on occasions.

The juniors were outstanding with the A team topping division 1 with a 100 per cent record and the B team runners-up, losing only to the A team. The C team were runners-up in division 2 and the D team held its position in division 3.

On Sunday August 5 the club were honoured to host the finals of the Plymouth and District (Bowl) Handicap Cup tournament. The teams competing were Plymstock (holders), St Budeaux, St Mellion and Tavistock.

Each team plays the other three with two mixed doubles matches, a men's doubles match and a ladies' doubles match on a self handicapping basis which evens up any differences in standards so resulting in close matches. Tavistock did well as runners-up to St Budeaux as follows:

P W D L F A Pts

St Budeaux 3 3 0 0 9 3 6

Tavistock 3 1 1 1 7 5 3

Plymstock 3 0 2 1 5 7 2

St Mellion 3 0 1 2 3 9 1

Tavistock players: Kylie/David Martin, Olga Rogers/Ray Hinton, Owen/Tric Locker, Rob Orton/Babette Jackson and Nikki Hoar/Phil Harbottle. Note: the minimum entry per team was two mixed pairs so as to play all matches: Tavistock played five pairs to give a wide range of players a chance to play.

In recent friendly matches Tavistock beat North Wyke 8-3 at home. The score does not reflect the play as there were some long rallies and close games.

In the mixed doubles Annie/Mike Jefferies v their 1st pair, 2-0 sets; v 2nd pair 2-0 sets. Pat Pope/David Isaac v their 1st pair 1-1 set, v 2nd pair 0-2 sets. Men's doubles 2-0 sets. With the ladies doubles there was only time to play one set which went to a tie break 6-5 (9-7), the longest one of the day.

Tavistock lost 3-5 away against Launceston who avenged their defeat of the same score earlier in the year at Tavistock in an enjoyable evening match with only mixed doubles.

Tavistock team: Josie Gerhold/John Burgess and Babette Jackson/Brian Morris, who in one set came back from 1-5 down, to win it in the longest set of the match.
