JU Jitsu Tavistock has officially become an independent club.

Umberto Bergonzini, the club instructor, said this means the club does not have to be subjected to the politics and impositions that come with being part of a small association.

?We found that our aims as a club were not being met by the association and it was decided that the needs of the students, specifically in relation to their development as martial artists, would be better met if we became an independent club,? said Umberto.

?The club will be able to plan its own academic year which will include the routine grading examinations as well as extra activities such as workshops, demonstrations, charity events and self-defence courses specifically designed for women,? he said.

From a personal and technical point of he never lost touch with his jujitsu roots - regularly taking trips to Italy to train and take examinations.

?After some consideration I realised the time was right to introduce my students to the Go Ju style of jujitsu,? said Umberto.

This is very important for the club?s technical development as we can draw from the expertise of my teacher, Maestro Piero Rovigatti 8th dan jujitsu and also the founder of the Go Ju school, Maestro Gianni Rossato 10th dan jujitsu.?

The club meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 8pm and 9.30pm. Anyone interested in joining can contact Umberto on (01822) 618952 or come to one of the classes which are held at the Scout Hall in Pixon Lane.
