THE weather has had a lot of input into the golf at Okehampton this last week.

Although Brian Jefferies, as captain of the Devon veterans' golfing captains, managed to host the annual match against the Devon lady captains' society. Though a few heavy rain and hail storms tried to spoil the day, it was a great success with all players enjoying the occasion. The result was very close with a 4-3 win to the veterans.

The ladies versus juniors match had to be postponed on Wednesday due to the weather. Hopefully time will be found in the future for this fixture.

The juniors' championship however was a great success, held on Sunday in lovely conditions and some great scoring ensued. Jonny Rattenbury had a good morning with a gross 77 and a fantastic afternoon with a gross 73 making him the junior champion with a gross 150. Lawrence Waldron was second with a morning's 85 followed by 89 in the afternoon, making him second with 174. Third was Will Searle with 89 and 88, giving him 177 — leaving him the the nett champion with a 129. There was also an 18 hole Stableford competition for non-CONGU handicap players, this was won by Jack Cornwall with 24 points and second was Robert Wildash with 22 points.

Nearest the pin on the 12th was won by Jonny Rattenbury and Tom Hawking.

On Saturday it was a qualifying Stableford for the men — the course was tricky after the heavy rain but had dried out remarkably well.

The winner of division one was vice captain Pete Murphy with 41pts, second was Chris Hurley 40 pts and third was Jim Butcher 39 pts. Division two was won by Paul Macdonald on 40 pts with Dan Curtis claiming second place by virtue of a better back nine scoring the same 39pts as Will Potts. Division three saw Dave Turner winning with an excellent 42 pts on countback from Andy Parry and Lee Pengelly was third with 39pts.
