SUCCESS has become standard to bear for a member of the Okehampton branch of the Royal British Legion. At the recent annual county meeting of the RBL, James Stacey, 21, of Halwill Junction, received the Devon Championship Trophy from the Devon president of the RBL, Major General Andrew Keeling. James is now the county standard bearer and his duties include carrying the county standard at official events in Devon as well as national events including the national festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall and the national service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph. James works at Okehampton Glass and has been the standard bearer of the Okehampton branch since he was 16, after being recruited from the Okehampton detachment of the Air Training Corps. During this time he was the youngest RBL standard bearer in the country. He will shortly be competing in the South West Regional Competition and has his sights set on becoming the national standard bearer. Another Okehampton ATC member, Ben Stephens, 17, is now the deputy standard bearer of Okehampton, continuing the trend to encourage youth awareness of the activities of the RBL. Ben is currently training to compete in the National Youth Championship.
