IT HAS been two years from planning stages to fruition with plenty of campaigning, team work and hard graft — but now the results of the Tavistock BMX Trails will be on show to the public at the official 'opening jam' this Sunday.
Tavistock BMX enthusiasts are inviting family, friends and members of the public to watch or join in with some competitions, a barbecue and live music.
The BMX trails in the Meadows have been open for a couple of months, but organisers hope the official opening will encourage people to come along and see what the trails have to offer.
The two-year project has been spearheaded by Tavi Riders and supported by Tavistock Youth Café, after BMX riders decided they needed somewhere safe to ride instead of using the unsuitable skate park or secluded wooded areas.
The Tavi Riders submitted a proposal to the town council and agreed a lease for the former putting green.
BMX rider Steve Tonkin, who owns a popular BMX track in Portreath, Cornwall designed the Tavistock Trails and has worked with the Tavi Riders throughout the building process, teaching them how to maintain the track.
Sponsored by Lifer BMX and several other companies, the trails are now in use and trees have been planted around the perimeter to provide shelter and reduce noise.
The opening jam will see visitors entertained by local youth bands Full Flavour Function, Arch Bishops of Tavistock and DJ John Harley and riders can take part in a number of dirt jump competitions.
Vicki Lloyd of Tavistock Youth Café said: 'It's brilliant that the trails are now open but we wanted to have an official opening so the youngsters could show off what they have done and how much they have achieved.'
The opening jam will take place from 11am onwards with the town mayor Cllr Philip Sanders officially opening the trails at 11.15am.
The first competition, the pump track challenge, will be at 1pm followed by the fastest dad challenge, for father's day, at 3pm. Other competitions include highest air, with age categories, and long jump.
Public access to the trails is located on Plymouth Road. A £1 donation is requested towards the public liability fund to enable the trails to remain free to the public.
If the weather is unsuitable, the opening jam may be postponed.
