IN division one of the Okehampton and district Table Tennis League things have become tight at the top.
Tavistock A's 10-0 home win against Academy A saw them draw level on points at the top with Okehampton A, who only managed a draw away to The J Team.
Tavistock A proved too strong for Academy A although Tom Pearce took Fred Phillips all the way just losing 11-7, 6-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-9 in the fifth. Tavistock's bonus point was enough for them to draw level at the top of the table with Okehampton A. Tavistock A scores were Fred Phillips (3), Peter Hicks (3), Roger Bowkett (3). Academy A scores were Tom Pengelly (0), Tom Pearce (0), Ben Hill (0). Tavistock A also won the doubles.
Previous leaders Okehampton A were away to The J Team. Naomi Jackson maintained her 100% winning record supported by Sarah Jackson who secured her first win of the season beating Barry Denner in a close game 12-10, 13-11, 6-11, 13-11.
With Okehampton A 4-5 up and sensing victory, Naomi and Sarah took on Barry Denner and John Squire in the last doubles and came back from the brink to force a draw on the night with a fifth set win 10-12, 2-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-9. The J Team scores were Naomi Jackson (3), Frank Cockburn (0), Sarah Jackson (1). Okehampton A scores were Tony Howick (2), Barry Denner (1), John Squire (2).
The Young Ones moved into third place in the table with a hard fought 7-3 win against Bridestowe. Bridestowe's Mark Fogerty did well to beat George Haskell in five sets 11-8, 7-11, 11-5, 9-11, 6-11, and Francis Griffiths edged home for Bridestowe in a close encounter with Andy Moppett 7-11, 11-6, 13-15, 11-7, 9-11. Losing 7-2 on the night Bridestowe's Mark Fogerty teamed up with Phil Down against George and Edward Haskell in the last doubles and squeezed home in the fifth 11-8, 6-11, 12-10, 3-11, 11-13. The Young Ones scores were George Haskell (2), Edward Haskell (3), Andy Moppett (2). Bridestowe scores were Mark Fogerty (1), Francis Griffiths (1), Phil Down (0).
In the all Tavistock match at the Anchorage Centre, Anchorage A beat newly promoted club rivals Anchorage B 10-0 and also secured a bonus point. Anchorage A scores were Colin Brooker (3), Dave Edwards (3), Bob Vella (3). Anchorage B scores were Dave Wilson (0), Roger Gilbert (0), Jenny Gilbert (0). Anchorage A also won the doubles.
In division two, Okehampton B travelled to Milton Abbot and came away with a 4-6 win, with Milton Abbot only able to field two players. Janice Seabrook maintained her 100% winning record for Okehampton B beating both Michael Blatchford and Mark Cousins.
Richard Randell also beat Michael Blatchford 3-11, 9-11, 13-11, 7-11. Mark Cousins and Michael Blatchford took on Richard and June Randell in the last doubles and came through 11-3, 5-11, 14-12, 11-7 to ensure Milton Abbot stay just two points behind Okehampton B at the top of division two.
