TAVISTOCK Tennis Club held the finals of its annual club tournaments last Saturday on a beautiful day, which enabled all matches to be completed.
There were some new faces, both runners-up and winners with a good turnout of supporters and some entertaining matches; notably the ladies? doubles and boys? U18 doubles which both went to three sets each lasting more than two hours.
There were outstanding performances by Phil Harbottle, who was a triple winner, Josie Gerhold and Annie Jefferies, both winners and runners-up, and junior Russell Rice winner and runner up.
Tournament results: Phil Harbottle beat Matt Salisbury, in his first final, 6-0, 6-0 which was much closer than the score depicts with many dueces.
It was a good performance by Matt as he has only recently returned to regular play and served well but Phil?s returns and consistency in rallies were deciding factors. This is the third time Phil has won the final.
Ladies? singles: Annie Jefferies beat Claire Heard, in her first final, 6-2, 6-0 where, similarly to the men?s, play was closer than the score with some close games. Claire, a new member, did particularly well in reaching her first final as she was virtually a novice six months ago and is one of the most improved players in the club.
Ladies? doubles: Di Kersey/Gaynor Pollard, in her first final, beat Annie Jefferies/Josie Gerhold, in her first final, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in a close match with long rallies.
Men?s doubles: Phil Harbottle/Mark Watson, a new member in his first final, pairing well with Phil, beat Bernard Mowle/John Jackson, in his first final, 6-4, 6-4 which was a typical men?s match with hard hitting and sharp volleys.
Mixed doubles (veterans): Josie Gerhold/Phil Harbottle beat Jane Colegate/Bernard Mowle 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 where there was some good play but Jane/Bernard faded a little after a good start.
Juniors: U12 and U15 played three weeks before. U12 girls? Sarah Lucas beat Deborah Allan. U12 boys? Tom Bury beat Rhys Byrne. U15 girls; Lizzie Beckett beat Ella Evans 6-4. U15 boys; George Batt beat Josh Evans 6-2.
U18 boys singles: Russell Rice beat James Martin 6-3, 7-5 where there were some long hard fought rallies, one of 29 strokes. U18 boys doubles: Ashley Rice/Jamie Osborne beat Russell Rice/Tom Walters 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in a long and exhausting match and it was nice to see such a variety of shots.
Junior player of the year and the boys? captain awards went to Russell Rice who has served the club well and the most improved junior award went to George Batt.
The traditional doubles, parents with sons or daughters event, usually held on the day as the main finals, this year will be on July 19.
President and mayor of Tavistock Norma Woodcock presented the trophies and the day was rounded off with a barbecue in the evening organised by Viv and Mike Iles.
