IT'S smiles all round for an Okehampton family as they celebrate the birth of their baby girl —the first Okehampton baby of the New Year. Lee and Beth Pengelly, who live on Crediton Road, are pictured with their son Cole, 6, and their new baby, Phoebe May. Phoebe is all set to be number one — she was born at 11.11am on January 1! She is in the best of health and tipped the scales at 8lb10oz. Mother Beth works as a midwife at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, where she gave birth to Phoebe. She said the labour was smooth and she was treated like a queen in the ward in which she works. She added that she thought it would be nice to give birth in the place where she works. Lee was also present to witness the birth. New Year is already a busy time for the Pengellys — Cole was born on New Year's Eve, 2001. New Year's Eve 2007, the day before Phoebe's birth, saw the family celebrating Cole's birthday by going bowling and shopping. When asked about the arrival of his baby sister, Cole said: 'I love Phoebe May.' Phoebe was the only baby in Okehampton to be born on New Year's Day with Okehampton and District Hospital reporting no births — a big difference from last year when midwives delivered three babies in Okehampton.
