THE men's section of Tavistock Hockey Club collected on a bright Saturday this week to celebrate a considerable milestone for one of its members. Roger Young has concluded his 50th hockey playing year! Former Tavistock players returned from near and far to take part in this celebration, one even flying in from Germany for the occasion. Roger picked his side consisting of the former players and those he has encouraged over the years, while John Barratt captained a slightly junior side. The game was played in great spirit with Roger's side taking the lead, Greenaway displaying his characteristic poaching style to take the goal. Spells of good hockey abounded seeing Roger demonstrate to the younger players that a wise head can be a match for youthful speed. Following a little light refreshment the second half saw more of the same pleasing hockey. As the game wore on substitutes were made - one a particular crowd pleaser saw the president, Rodney Hodge, take to the field — which has been unseen for many a year. With little between the sides it was fitting that Barratt's men struck back with Doney taking a well constructed goal levelling the score. With well controlled and flowing hockey all who participated enjoyed the occasion, raising over £140 for charity. The celebration continued to the club's presentation night, where Roger was presented with an engraved rose bowl and picture of the teams.
