WE read in the Times (June 8) that Euro MP Giles Chichester suggests that the alteration to the Bedford Square was an 'ill thought out plan'.
Do we need a Euro MP to tell us what we have been saying for months?
Traders are no doubt concerned with loss of trade. Isn't it time that residents were concerned about the appearance of the ancient square which is part of our heritage and the charm of the town.
The Duke of Bedford designed the town centre in 1839 and nothing should have been done to alter his wonderful taste.
We don't need or want the ugly so called 'enhancement' so please give us back our square as it was (nothing is impossible) and admit that the 'ill-thought out' plan was a mistake.

YOUR paper prints many complaints about present-day Bedford Square but this past Saturday it seemed to come into its own.
The Lions had drawn up their van onto the wide pavement, the better to receive a steady stream of cars pulling into the lay-by or up onto the pavement with goods for Mozambique.
Further along there were a fair number of young people waiting perhaps for a coach or maybe for the wedding due shortly, if the peeling bells were anything to go by.
A busy scene and a pleasant one in the warm sun.
