DISASTER almost struck just half an hour before guests started arriving for a lavish charity ball in Hatherleigh this weekend, when water started running through the roof. However, the deluge was quickly stemmed and despite the appalling weather the first Hatherleigh Starlight Ball proved a great success. The ball, held last Saturday, raised more than £5,000 for breast cancer research. The black tie ball took place at West Fishleigh Farm by kind permission of Robert and Carol Barkwell. Around 100 guests enjoyed a champagne reception and canapes, followed by a meal and a silent auction during the evening. The event was rounded off with music provided by the Hard Place Band. The event was the first of its kind and organisers hope to make it an annual event.
