TESCO is showing its true colours even before they open. Following their planning application for a sign outside of Tesco, the signage omits all the businesses that are based on the Plymouth Road Estate — even though Tesco agreed they would include them. Of course, now they have got the permission they wanted, the existing businesses aren't needed by Tesco. Tesco also said they would create 50 plus jobs, but they are advertising the positions for the Tavistock store in their other stores! Tesco do not have a very good record on animal welfare. They sell live turtles to their customers in China, for the customer to kill as they will, either by pulling the shell off or cutting off the turtle's limbs until it dies. Even though they have received many objections to selling live turtles. Tesco's response to my question of selling live turtles: 'We appreciate you are concerned about the animal welfare issues associated with the sale of turtles in China. 'We have a track record of considering evidence, working with others and listening to their concerns. 'As a result, we have made several significant improvements to the way turtles are sold in our stores, such as making sure that the way in which they are handled is to the highest possible standard. 'This approach to animal welfare and the sale of live turtles — seeking out research, acting on it and educating customers — is unprecedented by any retailer operating in China and we hope that these actions will help to drive up standards throughout the supply chain. 'Turtles are a popular and traditional part of the Chinese diet and, having addressed these important animal welfare concerns, we continue to sell turtles in our stores in China. ' It was recorded on the front page of the Times on May 16, 2014 that Tesco do not have plans for a café, pharmacy, and opticians. If you follow Tesco's career, what Tesco's want, Tesco's usually gets. Let's hope the residents of Tavistock vote with their feet and their cash and eventually Tesco will follow Macdonalds out of Tavistock. Tavistock is a wonderful old market town with great independent shops. We run holiday cottages and many of our guests say 'our town used to be like this, and then the supermarkets came in and destroyed it'. Jenny Rogers Tavistock
