TODAY the Three Nations International Championships, tomorrow the Olympics — that is where 15-year-old swimming sensation Charlotte Maxwell from Okehampton plans to be.
Charlotte will make her international swimming debut this weekend in Cambridge as part of the England Swimming Squad.
The country will be competing against Italy and Germany in the Three Nations International Championship.
Charlotte is a member of Exeter Swimming Club and was selected as a member of England's Junior Team after an excellent performance at the Senior National Championships held earlier this year in Sheffield. She was ranked No.1 in the country at the 50 metres breaststroke event for the second year running.
The teenager has been competing since she was ten, firstly with the Torrington Swimming Squad and latterly with Exeter where her dad was once club chairman. Her ambition is to take part in the Olympics.
'I have improved a lot very quickly,' she said. 'Over the last couple of years I have realised I can do very well and have started working harder. That is why I have improved so much.
'Until this point swimming was something I just did. When I got picked I thought "I can do this" and make a career out of it.
'It was a shock when I heard I got selected — my mum was crying and jumping around but I just could not believe it.
'Once I have done my A-levels I want to go to Bath University which is the centre of excellence on a scholarship,' she said.
At the moment Charlotte is studying for her GCSEs at Okehampton College. She admits it is tough to study for exams and complete 14 hours of swimming practice a week plus all the fitness exercises but she is determined to succeed.
Four days after competing at the Three Nations Championship she is off to Sheffield to take part in the British Winter Nationals where she has qualified to swim the 50 metres and 100 metres breaststroke.
A good result would mean her being selected for the Great Britain team at the Six Nations Championships in Germany next year
'If I can swim well between now and May there is a possibility that I may get picked for the European Juniors, added Charlotte.
