A TWO year international music project will culminate this weekend in Okehampton.

Wren Music will be playing host to choirs from five European nations to mark the end of a two year EU project, TESST: Traditional European Songs Singing Together.

Since October 2011, Wren's local choirs have visited choirs in Romania, Italy, Spain, Germany and Portugal as part of the Grundtvig Lifelong Learning Partnership programme.

This weekend, the five European choirs will visit Okehampton for a concert and the chance to experience British culture.

Each choir has provided four songs for all choirs to sing together, and has sung a short concert of songs typical to their nationality.

Paul Wilson, music director of Wren Music said: 'Getting our tongues around such a variety of languages has been a challenge, but in the end music is a universal language, and friendships have been made across the continent.'

The songs shared by Wren were the Dartmoor Wassail, Tom's Gone to Hilo, the Sweet Nightingale, and Fathom the Bowl.

Two of the songs come from the Baring-Gould folk song collection at Wren, and during a performance while in Portugal, Fathom the Bowl received a standing ovation.

Project manager Marilyn Tucker said: 'We are very pleased to be welcoming our friends from the TESST project to Okehampton, and we hope the town will enjoy meeting them.'

Members of the West Devon Folk Choir have a hectic weekend planned, including a civic reception at the town hall on Saturday, June 8 at 3pm, followed by a traditional cream tea.

In the evening the choirs will be invited to a traditional Devon folk night to include singing and dancing.

The event culminates in a free concert at All Saints Parish Church at 6.30pm on Sunday, June 9.

All are welcome.
