THE Ordulph Arms in Tavistock was packed to capacity for the Christmas Taste and see dinner last Tuesday. Tickets sold out two weeks before the event in which Jo Wright, a local teacher, performed her own songs ? they are available on CD with all profits going to a children?s rescue centre in Tanzania where she and her husband worked. Jo spoke of how she had been inspired by her faith and family background to compose from an early age. In her late teens and early twenties she toyed with composing and performing as a career but decided to teach and fill her spare time with music. Jo has experienced highs and lows in her life and questioned the existence of an all powerful God in the face of both personal and corporate suffering, particularly of innocent children. But she believes God has been with her and it was during times of acute illness that she wrote some of her best songs. The birth of her two children and the joy they have brought to her and her husband helped to inspire one of her best known compositions: Hannah?s Song. Ruth Newman , chairman of Taste and See, thanked Jo for a wonderful evening. The next Taste and See dinner will be announced in the New Year and will take place at the beginning of February. Taste and See is organised by a committee representing the churches of the Tavistock area and is open to all women of any age.
