THE Kelly Choral Society and Orchestra's Christmas concert took place recently in Tavistock Parish church, with their conductor Andrew Wilson and organist Mary Mazur-Park. They began with Mozart's Missa Brevis, with soloists Caren Friel, Maria Collier, Barry Farley and Ian Hardy. This is an exquisite miniature, splendidly performed by a strong choir and deliberately small orchestra. The choir was well-balanced, and made the most of the obvious exuberance of the teenage Mozart. Caren Friel is new to performing with Kelly, and she gave an inspired performance of Mozart's Exsultate Jubilate. The final Alleluia! left the audience in no doubt about the impact she had made. Andrew Wilson's The Mistletoe Bough was heard in the second half, a setting for soloists, chorus, strings and organ of 'a Gothic Folly'. The balance between soloists and chorus was extremely good, the touches of humour alleviating the tragic nature of the piece. They finished with five Christmas carols, including Cornelius's setting of 'The three Kings', with Ian Hardy as soloist. Felicity Barnaby
