A FASCINATING photograph has been sent into the Times by local historians Hilary and Mike Wreford of Okehampton.

Mike said it featured the 'tug of war' team on horseback at the Fox and Hounds Hotel near Bridestowe, situated on the main A386 road, midway between Okehampton and Tavistock.

Mike said: 'A popular Dartmoor hostelry, it apparently hosted some of these now forgotten tournaments some 100 years ago and I would be interest if any one has any knowledge of this Dartmoor event.

'The Fox and Hounds' 'back garden' at one time had a nine hole golf course, but this unfortunately, came to an end many years ago.

'One unusual guest was Haile Selassie, the deposed Emperor of Ethiopia, who besides lengthy stays at the White Hart Hotel, Okehampton, with his retinue, also stayed at the Fox and Hounds on probably two occasions, much to the interest of locals.
