CALLINGTON Community College has been successful in obtaining a share of funding thanks to £1.8-million of Government money to fund a series of new school-led foreign languages programmes. Over the next two years the college will be working with a large number of primary schools across Cornwall, Devon and Plymouth focusing on increasing teacher competence and confidence. The programme includes languages training in French or Spanish for primary staff with only basic language skills as well as workshops to develop teaching skills. Participating primary schools will also receive a selection of primary languages resources. Sean Morris, principal at Callington Community College, said: 'This is a fantastic opportunity for our teachers to work with primary colleagues to improve standards of language teaching and learning and to increase the interest in other European cultures.' When the Government announced the funding, Education Secretary Nicky Morgan said: 'We want our young people to have the best possible start in life — that is why, as part of our plan for education, we want every child to learn a foreign language. It doesn't just help them to understand different cultures and countries, it opens up the world.'
