I SEE the NIMBY Brigade are once again on the march, this time over the proposed Windpower generator to be sited in Jacobstowe. It seems to me that these people pop up wherever any planning proposal is put forward, so let's imagine a world where the NIMBYs always get their way and the results that follow. There would be no new coal-fired power plants (they're dirty and add to the CO2 levels). There would be no new gas fired plants (gas is another hydrocarbon and therefore a pollutant). There would be no new biomass power plants (too many lorries along our already crowded roads). No new nuclear power (dangerous technology/long term waste problems). No new solar power (too unsightly and a waste of good farm land). No new hydro-electric plants (requires large water resourses such as reservoirs and lakes), and of couse no new windpower. So now look to the future. Without new generating capacity our current power plants will be unable to supply all we need within the next 5 years. EDF have already requested easing of the safety regulaions of its nuclear plant at Dungeness to enable it to run for a further four years. There is a closure plan in place for other older coal and nuclear plants, again this would reduce the total output which barely matches demand now. Eventually we would have no electricity generation of our own. We could buy it in or we could return to Victorian times. Imagine a world with no television or loud music, quite idyllic you might think, but think on no computors, no modern hospitals, no central heating (even gas requires electricity for the controls), no airtraffic control, so no aircraft, no offices, no transport except by horse power no cars, no petroleum products, in short no modern world. So do we let the NIMBY brigade rule or do we wake up to reality? We need pollution free power. Everywhere is someone's back yard, so instead of protesting I hope the majority of people in Jacobstowe welcome the proposed development and ensure not only their own future power needs but contribute to the power needs of other people less fortunate than themselves. I'd rather live in a rural area with wind power than it a modern city with all its woes and problems. I welcome the proposed development in Jacobstowe and would support further such development ( I would like a similar turbine in Okehampton park. The disruption is limited, the space required about 35 square metres and the benefits substantial to all council tax payers) Please support our children and grandchildre's future.
